Welcome to your new Naval History Website!
BritishNavalHistory.com launched in September 2013 and offers naval historians of all levels and interests a source of information, a route to reach a wide audience for your written work, and a place for congenial discussion. We will publish articles by established naval historians, early-career researchers and specialists in aspects of naval, nautical and maritime history, professional and amateur; longer works such as monographs, conference transactions, academic theses and full-length books will also be published through the website.
To help researchers we provide a page of links to organisations involved in or attached to naval history, a list of books (which will be frequently expanded), and a calendar of near-future events. Organisers of events within the naval, nautical and maritime areas of interest are invited to contact us with details and a link to their own websites.
The website also includes regular blogs by the two editors, both naval historians, discussing issues relevant to those interested in the navies of all periods and all countries, including the current and future navies of the world. The opinions expressed in them are those of the writers and may sometimes be contentious – we hope they will always be interesting.
We are delighted to have a fascinating essay on Charles II’s “Thirty Ships” by the leading historian of that important development Peter Le Fevre, and an outline of the history of the Royal Naval Medical Service by INM Librarian Jane Wickenden as two of our launch papers, and look forward to reading proposals for many others. Our Call for Papers and Style Guide are available on request and can be read in our Articles section online.
The list of articles in preparation by guest authors, several to be posted on the BNH website in the next few weeks, offers a feast of interesting and important topics, so keep coming back to the site – put our URL in your favourites list!
